Ann&Lee at Valdale Farm

My sister joked with friends from Boston, her hometown, about coming up to visit the farm. Or maybe they suggested in jokingly. That must be it. She took their funny idea and thought about it seriously and asked me. I said “of course!” We love having visits to the farm and including friends and friends-to-be … as well as siblings, of course.
So our new friends, Lee and Ann trekked up to the farm with my sister, Ashley in tow – AND their wonderful furry companion, Violet. On their last morning up in Vermont I asked if they wanted to go have a quick shoot around the farm with Violet and then go “downtown” to Enosburg to get some more urban shots. They were quick to say yes – Violet needed a morning walk … and they said they’d been here long enough to not mind having their rumpled version photographed. I don’t really think they have the rumpled look … they hadn’t been here THAT long ;)

Brittni :: class of 2012

Brittni’s mom contacted me saying Brittni insisted on Brown Eyed Photography for her Senior Portraits. Brittni saw Sarah’s pictures on the Brown Eyed Photography fan page when Brittni was a sophomore and was excited about her senior shoot with me ever since. I’m so glad! Brittni is such a fun senior and we loved hanging out, finding cool spots in town, and talking about life. What a gem she is!

Kelly and Pat :: Saint Michael’s College Wedding

Kelly and Pat are the nicest couple you’ll ever meet. Seriously. All their friends told us as they got ready for their day. We knew they were nice enough but most people are nice, right?
It didn’t take long until we had fallen totally in love with these two – just like all of their family and friends who loved being in the glow of Kelly and Pat. They are so warm hearted, welcoming, and super friendly. AND we had the privilege of photographing their beautiful wedding!

Pat and Kelly both got a little more emotional than they had expected during the ceremony. Kelly and I had talked a lot about the importance of living in the moment during your wedding day and during the ceremony it was clear Kelly and Pat were very present in the moment.

Kelly and Pat started dating senior year of college – when they lived in neighboring townhouses at Saint Mike’s (aka – The Harvard of the North, according to a family member of Kelly’s) – so we HAD to go over to Townhouse 304 and 305 in wedding beauty!

The bridesmaids were superb! So friendly, cute, and up for anything. And do you see these stunning flowers from Randi at Silver Toad Florist?

awesome awesome dancing!

Incredible speeches – really really funny and sweet. Burned fleece jackets, wrestling poison ivy, sweet birthday singing … and more – oh! the speeches. sigh.

Adorable Andrew

What an honor to visit the adorable Andrew. His parents are so fun to hang out with and when you’re with Andrew you’ll find you lose track of time just like when you’re with his parents. I’m so excited for Laura and Brian and the start of their family. They have morphed into parenthood with grace and ease – so so fun to see.

Congratulations again, Laura and Brian. Thank you again for inviting me into your lives during another very exciting stage of life.

Farm Life in Color

The blog has been quiet, huh? We’ve been busy busy busy and more busy with the farm. We currently have 400 birds (chickens, guineas, and turkeys), about an acre in garden (flowers, herbs, vegetables, and fruit), five pigs, and a couple of bee hives (which led to much stinging two days ago so I’m not so happy with the bees right now). Our muscles becoming more defined, our farmers tans are darkening (despite our faithful sunblock applications), and we’re enjoying the flow of farming.

People keep asking how photography is going … when I’m not pulling the camera out to a dew covered garden or sunbathed chickens I’m still off shooting seniors and babies and we’re busy with weddings. Kelly and Pat‘s wedding yesterday was incredible! I can’t wait to show all the fun images we got with these two and their fantastic wedding party! But first I need to collect eggs, weed a little (okay, a lot!), and pick some strawberries.

All this to say: we’re still here! We’re loving working with our awesome clients this summer and giving pigs head scratches, bringing flowers and produce to the local farmer’s market, and even weeding.

Michelle – Class of 2012

I know. The blog has been neglected. Our move and subsequent spring on the farm has been very busy and continues to be hectic. I couldn’t resist sharing a couple images from Michelle’s wonderful senior session!

Michelle is as beautiful as she is confident. I loved spending time at her home, her elementary school, and on the busiest street in her town. Michelle is a senior rep this year for Brown Eyed Photography and I’m honored and thrilled to work with her!

A Wedding Photography Spring Special!

We’re here! Our big move to Vermont was a rainy one on Saturday, but we made it. Longtime fans and friends of Brown Eyed Photography have known that we have been in the process of relocating from from Rhode Island up to our family’s farm in Vermont, and now we’re here at last (along with our six urban chickens, who are currently loving their new farm to roam! If you want to follow the farm fun you can check out the farm blog. Updating it with pictures of the coop move is on my to-do list!).

In celebration of our making it back to Vermont, we’re offering a great Wedding Photography Spring Special: when designing your custom product collection as part of the wedding photography package, clients may select either a free upgrade to all digital files when the 100 image selection is chosen (a $500 value), OR a free upgrade on your wedding album when a wedding album is chosen (a $400 value). Note that this is a spring special, so it’s only for wedding clients that book on or before June 21, 2011! (The wedding date can be anytime, it just needs to be booked by the end of spring.)

We’re excited about our 2011 wedding season in Vermont and love seeing the dates fill in for Vermont weddings for 2012!

Jack is a big brother! Welcome Will!

I was thrilled to hear from Rebecca to let me know they were expecting this spring – Jack was going to be a big brother! Rebecca was a little nervous that Brown Eyed Photography would be already in Vermont by the time Baby V.2.0 arrived. Fortunately, Will came a week and a half before our big move – at 40 weeks and 1 day, just like Jack.

Will looks so much like Jack sometimes with his almost red hair (I bet it will be blond like his brother) but he was super mellow baby in comparison to Jack. Awake the w-h-o-l-e time and just taking in the world. When we did some shots with his mom, Will’s whole face lit up with wonder. He’s lovin’ his Momma!

How to choose the best wedding photographer for YOU

So many decisions when planning a wedding. It’s exciting, it’s fun…and it’s even a little overwhelming. Here is a little help when making the choice of who should be at your wedding capturing the memories of the day.

Your wedding photographer is one of the first people you’ll see on your wedding day that will make the day feel like it’s really finally here! Your wedding photographer is likely to be one of the last people you see before you walk down the aisle and the first person you see as you walk back down the aisle with your wedding band newly placed on your finger!

When your wedding day is said and done what you’ll have left after all of the planning and anticipating and your perfectly executed wedding day will be the images. These will hold your memories and be the piece of your incredible day that gets passed from generation to generation. These are what you’ll pull out at anniversaries, on date nights, and just when you’re wanting to remember the magic that made your day your day. This is why your photographer choice is important and this is why we take our jobs very very seriously.

Things to look for when choosing a wedding photographer:

Someone who is willing to meet with you, just to get to know you and for you to get to know them. It takes personally meeting with your photographer to determine if they are the best match.  Their website or a referral alone won’t give the whole perspective.

Consider the photographer’s style and skills. Browse their portfolio and blog.  Is there consistency? Can they work under a variety of conditions and scenarios?  Every photographer has a unique vision – do they provide the “look” that you would like for your wedding images?

Does the photographer work alone or as a team?  Josh and I work as a wife-husband team and it rocks. We get to work together doing what we love and our work and life are intermingled. We love that. It shows in our work and our interactions with our clients. We each know where the other is going to be and have no problem critiquing and pushing each other to always improve.  Another benefit is allowing your “photographer” to be in two places at once!

How about engagement sessions? We believe pre-wedding engagement sessions are essential and greatly improve both the relationship and the final images. When we’ve had a couple of hours to hang out with our clients before the intensity of the wedding day – it makes things go that much more smoothly. This is why we include engagement sessions with every wedding service, and would encourage you to invest in an engagement session with whoever you choose to capture the images for your wedding day.

Weddings are a big deal. Make sure your photographer has back up equipment with them. Make sure they have a plan if they are deathly ill and can’t make it unexpectedly. Make sure your photographer is insured.

Consider what final products you would like to have. Album? Guest book? Digital files? Wall Portraits? Something else? Something more? There are numerous options and you may want to think through this a little in case there’s anything you absolutely must have after (or for) your wedding day. When you know what those products are you can be sure to find a photographer who can provide these items.  Product quality is important too.

Think long-term too.  You could be planting the seeds of a lasting relationship with someone to be your family’s photographer for life.

Above all else, seek out a photographer or team that you like. You’re going to be spending a lot of time working together, and you want them to see your day the same way as you do. If you meet with your potential photographer and you lose track of time talking about all sorts of interesting things – consider it a match!
