A Wedding Photography Spring Special!

We’re here! Our big move to Vermont was a rainy one on Saturday, but we made it. Longtime fans and friends of Brown Eyed Photography have known that we have been in the process of relocating from from Rhode Island up to our family’s farm in Vermont, and now we’re here at last (along with our six urban chickens, who are currently loving their new farm to roam! If you want to follow the farm fun you can check out the farm blog. Updating it with pictures of the coop move is on my to-do list!).

In celebration of our making it back to Vermont, we’re offering a great Wedding Photography Spring Special: when designing your custom product collection as part of the wedding photography package, clients may select either a free upgrade to all digital files when the 100 image selection is chosen (a $500 value), OR a free upgrade on your wedding album when a wedding album is chosen (a $400 value). Note that this is a spring special, so it’s only for wedding clients that book on or before June 21, 2011! (The wedding date can be anytime, it just needs to be booked by the end of spring.)

We’re excited about our 2011 wedding season in Vermont and love seeing the dates fill in for Vermont weddings for 2012!

Jack is a big brother! Welcome Will!

I was thrilled to hear from Rebecca to let me know they were expecting this spring – Jack was going to be a big brother! Rebecca was a little nervous that Brown Eyed Photography would be already in Vermont by the time Baby V.2.0 arrived. Fortunately, Will came a week and a half before our big move – at 40 weeks and 1 day, just like Jack.

Will looks so much like Jack sometimes with his almost red hair (I bet it will be blond like his brother) but he was super mellow baby in comparison to Jack. Awake the w-h-o-l-e time and just taking in the world. When we did some shots with his mom, Will’s whole face lit up with wonder. He’s lovin’ his Momma!

How to choose the best wedding photographer for YOU

So many decisions when planning a wedding. It’s exciting, it’s fun…and it’s even a little overwhelming. Here is a little help when making the choice of who should be at your wedding capturing the memories of the day.

Your wedding photographer is one of the first people you’ll see on your wedding day that will make the day feel like it’s really finally here! Your wedding photographer is likely to be one of the last people you see before you walk down the aisle and the first person you see as you walk back down the aisle with your wedding band newly placed on your finger!

When your wedding day is said and done what you’ll have left after all of the planning and anticipating and your perfectly executed wedding day will be the images. These will hold your memories and be the piece of your incredible day that gets passed from generation to generation. These are what you’ll pull out at anniversaries, on date nights, and just when you’re wanting to remember the magic that made your day your day. This is why your photographer choice is important and this is why we take our jobs very very seriously.

Things to look for when choosing a wedding photographer:

Someone who is willing to meet with you, just to get to know you and for you to get to know them. It takes personally meeting with your photographer to determine if they are the best match.  Their website or a referral alone won’t give the whole perspective.

Consider the photographer’s style and skills. Browse their portfolio and blog.  Is there consistency? Can they work under a variety of conditions and scenarios?  Every photographer has a unique vision – do they provide the “look” that you would like for your wedding images?

Does the photographer work alone or as a team?  Josh and I work as a wife-husband team and it rocks. We get to work together doing what we love and our work and life are intermingled. We love that. It shows in our work and our interactions with our clients. We each know where the other is going to be and have no problem critiquing and pushing each other to always improve.  Another benefit is allowing your “photographer” to be in two places at once!

How about engagement sessions? We believe pre-wedding engagement sessions are essential and greatly improve both the relationship and the final images. When we’ve had a couple of hours to hang out with our clients before the intensity of the wedding day – it makes things go that much more smoothly. This is why we include engagement sessions with every wedding service, and would encourage you to invest in an engagement session with whoever you choose to capture the images for your wedding day.

Weddings are a big deal. Make sure your photographer has back up equipment with them. Make sure they have a plan if they are deathly ill and can’t make it unexpectedly. Make sure your photographer is insured.

Consider what final products you would like to have. Album? Guest book? Digital files? Wall Portraits? Something else? Something more? There are numerous options and you may want to think through this a little in case there’s anything you absolutely must have after (or for) your wedding day. When you know what those products are you can be sure to find a photographer who can provide these items.  Product quality is important too.

Think long-term too.  You could be planting the seeds of a lasting relationship with someone to be your family’s photographer for life.

Above all else, seek out a photographer or team that you like. You’re going to be spending a lot of time working together, and you want them to see your day the same way as you do. If you meet with your potential photographer and you lose track of time talking about all sorts of interesting things – consider it a match!

In-person proofing!

Brown Eyed Photography has previously offered online proofing for the viewing of your images after your session or wedding.  We originally thought online proofing and ordering would be most convenient for clients, but after some very helpful feedback we’re switching gears and offering in-person proofing instead.

With online proofing, it can be overwhelming looking through such a number of images and trying to determine your favorites.  The ordering system was often confusing.  Plus, hosting images online requires a relatively small file size, and when viewing on other monitors that may not be color calibrated, your small images will simply not look their best.

With in person proofing we’re able to better serve you.  We will meet at an agreed upon location (your house? Convenient. Your favorite coffee shop? Yummy.) with all the gear in hand to present a personalized slide show of your images!  You can invite family and friends to your proofing session if you’d like – or surprise them later with their gift prints!  Then we can walk through the process of ordering your prints, your cards, your digital images, and more, finalizing everything before we part ways.

We’re excited about this change and the clients we’ve “test driven” this change on have loved it! If you have questions please contact me or leave a note in the comments section of the blog.

Stephanie and Mike Engagement Photography in the c-o-l-d!

When I first met Mike and Stephanie to talk about their wedding we had to leave because the coffee spot we were at was closing – then we talked for another 45 minutes or so in the parking lot. But if you’ve worked with me already, you know this isn’t uncommon. There’s just so much to talk about! Weddings, babies, farming … there’s a lot to talk about!
It was no different with Mike and Stephanie. I love who we get to work with. It’s an honor and a pleasure – every time!
We met at Arrowhead Acres, where Stephanie and Mike will be tying the knot in August in the outdoor chapel. It will be interesting to see the summer version of this location after seeing the end-of-winter-with-some-snow-banks-still-hanging-on version :) Stephanie described some of the wedding plans … we’re in for a treat. I can’t wait!

On the importance of professional newborn photography

Freshly born babies are unique. Unique to themselves but also unique in that the period of newborn is so very very tiny. Like new babies. In the first year babies go from lovely little lumps to crawling, smiling, drooling, eating, babbling, opinionated little people. It’s incredible.
And that new little lump holds all the wonder of its ancestors as well as all the promise of its future. Incredible. That tiny package that holds so much also happens to be one of the most precious things on the planet and it is my joy to capture.
These images are irreplaceable. Within weeks (never mind months or a year!) a new baby has transformed several times over. It’s difficult to remember what your 3 week old looked like before their eyes were open and gazing up at us regularly, before your 4 month old smiled at you just for coming close, before your one year old was decorating their hair with mashed food.
This is why professional newborn photography is important. To help you remember the wonder of those first weeks. The tiny curled body – that so recently was floating around inside your body – the soft wisps of hair, the unbelievably miniature fingernails … all of it!

p.s. Frankie, above, is a great example of what a baby who is days old looks like compared to how he looked at a year old! See? Amazing.

Rachel + Justin : BC + BU

Justin and Rachel tied the knot in the stunning Saint Ignatius Church of Boston College. Boston College, Rachel’s college home, not to be confused with Boston University, Justin’s college home. Usually the two college worlds only mingle on a rivalry basis. But Justin and Rachel were both part of R.O.T.C and I don’t think the military cares if you yell BU or BC at football games. So Rachel and Justin mingled – while running, right where we met up for their e-session. And the story goes that Justin and Rachel were adamantly “just friends” despite family and friend insistence that Rachel and Justin could be more than “just friends”. Somewhere along the way, they did indeed become more than “just friends”. Their friendship remains solid – it’s so clear that they just like being together. We were honored to capture their wedding day, surrounded by a fantastic, involved, loving family and equally supportive group of friends.
The whole day ran smoothly with the help of Heather Minicucci, of Simply Inviting Weddings. Thank you, Heather!
We started off the day with Rachel getting ready with her wedding party in Boston.

Everything about Justin and Rachel’s wedding said “Classic” – including a sweet antique car. The owner of the car told us that in its day the car sold for 5k – and with inflation you multiple that by seventeen to get what it would go for today. Wow.

The priest is a distant (but not very distant) cousin to Justin. He is a family history buff and explained how they shared a relation years ago during his homily.

Rachel spent an untold amount of time on these adorable decorations – so we made sure we captured these beauties as often as possible!

The swords come out again! For cake cutting!! This was so much fun!

During Rachel and Justin’s e-session, they couldn’t stop looking at each other! On their wedding day, it was pretty much the same.

And apparently Rachel’s sister doesn’t like getting out on the dance floor to show off her moves (I can relate!) – but she moved some and the whole dance floor was filled the entire night – from babies who couldn’t walk yet, to couples who’ve witnessed many many weddings, I’m sure.

Rachel and Justin spent most of the night on the dance floor themselves – Rachel said they’d been practicing (they were amazing, to say the least) – until the bustle broke and Josh captured this great sequence:

We’re still smiling in the glow of your wedding, Justin and Rachel. The day was spectacular all because we were celebrating your relationship. Thank you for inviting us to be part of your day!

4 Reasons Engagement Sessions are Essential

1. You get a chance to know us a little better before your big day.
You get used to being on that side of the camera with us on this side of the camera and learn it’s fun and easy!
You gain confidence in your role on your wedding day.
You get to know us a little more, which means there is no “The photographer is here!” panic on THE day – just “Oh, Sarah and Josh are here now.”

2. We get the chance to know you a little better before your big day.
We figure out what will get the best expression.
We start your day a couple hours further into our relationship.

3. We all have another excuse to hang out!
We love the people we work with and we love spending time with you. Engagement sessions give us all the opportunity to be together with far less stress and distraction than on your wedding day.

4. You have the opportunity to have fine portraiture as a couple in your “everyday” clothes.
Wedding images are exceptional. You are at your exceptional best with the one you love exceptionally best surrounded by exceptional locations that you picked out to showcase the beauty and individuality of your day.
Engagement sessions are about you, your exceptional love, and everyday life.
These images are priceless memories of your relationship before you exchanged rings. These are also perfect for wedding stationary – save-the-dates, invitations, holiday cards – a photographic guest book, wedding favors, wedding decorations, parent gifts, and more!

Every wedding package offered by Brown Eyed Photography includes an engagement session. We view this as an essential pre-wedding activity and are thrilled by all the benefits involved!

Curly Girl

Curly hair comes up a lot in my world. I have heard this from countless people: “I know someone who has curly hair, not as curly as yours but….”
Imagine my surprise when we were getting ready for Rachel and Justin’s wedding and the hair stylist said: “Meghan has curly hair – even curlier than yours.”

That was the moment all the curl girl advice came tumbling from my voice box. I couldn’t help it. A fellow curly girl?
Must share curly girl advice!

Here are the things that have changed my curly life:

A) Reading Curly Girl
B) Removing shampoo from my life completely
C) Using enormous amounts of conditioner – with no cones in the ingredient list (these are any ingredients that end in -cone … they cause buildup)
C) Never ever brushing, only finger combing in the shower with conditioner filled hair
D) A big handful of clear gel
E)Plopping – seriously changed my life and only a recent discovery

That’s my secret (but, being the extrovert that I am … well … I don’t really have secrets). I still have crazy hair days but overall I’m always pleasantly surprised. It’s easy and I feel comfortable wearing my hair down. Amazing. I know.
