1. drink water leading up to the big day – as much as you can stand!

2. use sunblock religiously prior to your wedding (and always, right?) to avoid funny tan lines on your wedding day

3. wear a button down shirt as you get ready for your day … easier to take that off after your hair and makeup is ready than a shirt you have to lift over your head.

4. say “yes” to a professional makeup artist and hair stylist who specialize in weddings. Professional artists make a big difference on your wedding day. Arranging to have these artists come to you will be much more relaxing than coordinating transportation to and from a salon.

5. have a trial run with your makeup artist and hair stylist before your big day. Arrive to your trial appointments with your hair and makeup as you usually wear them. This will give the artists an idea of what your “every day” look is – the look we all love – and how to bump it to the next level – the wedding day awesome level. Even if you decide not to go with a professional makeup artist, it’s still worth doing a trial run.

6. keep makeup simple and classic. You want to look back at these images in 20 years, 50 years, and see how gorgeous you were – not be distracted by trendy makeup.

7. two words: waterproof mascara. I’m not saying you’ll cry … but you might and it’s a long day where you want make up to stay in tip-top shape the whole time.

8. remember to touch up throughout the day: right before you walk down the aisle, right after the ceremony, right before the reception starts

9. smile! This is likely the day you will be photographed the most in your entire life, assume that someone is taking a picture of you at any time (we’re not the only ones holding cameras on your big day )

10. relax. In the end, it’s your day – the good, the hiccups, and the rain. It’s what makes your day YOURS and unforgettable.

We’re FIVE days into the new year and I stumbled upon this awesome blog post over on Huffington Post.

Every one of the ten resolutions listed for the newly engaged I found myself saying: “Yes! Oh, that one is good too!”

The very first resolution listed: “Resolve to not lose sight of the Day After the Wedding” is something I say to every couple I meet with for a pre-wedding consultation. I talk about how we want to work with couples who are invested in their wedding day and are enjoying their planning process AND are even more invested in their marriage. We feel love for each couple we work with and want more than anything for our couples to have long happy marriages – years of looking back on their beautiful images and remembering the day that they promised to stay together in good times and bad.

I also love the resolution: “Resolve to Celebrate who you guys both are“. Weddings tend to follow a pattern: get ready, ceremony, formal pictures, reception. What makes photographing weddings so incredible is seeing how each couple personalizes their wedding. Michael and Arik used pinwheels instead of bouquets, Kelly wore green shoes under her stunning dress and the Pat wore argyle socks, Rachel and Justin cut their wedding cake with a sword! It’s usually in the details that we find the uniqueness and it enriches our feeling of friendship for each of our couples. We love finding details that say: “oh, that’s sooo them!”

During Scott and Meg’s engagement session they said they really really wanted a Vermont themed wedding. A year later the wedding was perfect. The details were gorgeous and Meg, even with all the lists I knew were running through her head, was one calm bride. Oh, did I mention that right as we got there the power went out. Meg stayed cool. Power was back and running well before the ceremony started.

See, this is when the power is out. Could you get a bigger smile?! She knew, no matter what, she and Scott would be saying “I do” – power or no.
You might think this is a lot of shoe detail action. It’s not. Not for Meg. She limited herself to two pairs. Apparently she has a thing for shoes. Oh, and pink is her favorite color.

Spiffy seemed like the right word for Scott. Takes a real man to wear pink for his bride. Love love love Scott in pink.

Scott and Meg decided they wanted to see each other before the ceremony. With a mid-October evening wedding Meg was concerned we’d lose light and feel rushed after the ceremony. So First Look!

Stephanie and Mike‘s album and parent albums were sent off to them yesterday but I couldn’t resist offering a sneak peak. I love how thick the pages are for the albums we use, love the photo covers on the album and books, and I love the circle design that is on the cover of Stephanie and Mike’s album and books. Just lovely. So excited for them and this heirloom they have to share with family and friends for years to come.

Thank you both for being so wonderful. We’re so thankful for our growing friendship.

And we’ll end with a kind note from Stephanie right after they returned from their honeymoon:
“Thank-you so much for such a wonderful experience at our wedding. We have been raving about you guys since! You guys were awesome and it was so nice seeing you again.”

Meg and Scott had a detail rich wedding. We loved discovering the shutters used to display table assignments, the brown and pink color scheme, and having so much fun with a borrowed International tractor. Meg thought of everything and the finished effect was incredible. Seriously, she needs to design events for a living! We loved sharing the day with Meg and Scott and their awesome families.
More photo action coming soon! This was the teaser. Meg and Scott’s wedding was beautiful because of the details but unforgettable because of the way Scott looks at Meg and the way Meg lights up a room. The plan is to get the rest of the pictures blogged from this wedding this week.

Kristen and Mark are too cute and we’re so excited about their wedding. The sad news is we have to wait almost a whole year! I was happy to have these two up to the farm recently to have a fun engagement session with the last of the fall splendor. Their photographic guest book is off to the printer … maybe if you say “please” they’ll let you sneak a peak at it before their big day … or maybe they’re going to keep it a secret until the big day next October!

When they voted it was unanimous that I am the least sports-aware person the planet. BUT I know Amiee and Troy wouldn’t pass a chance to shoot some hoops (or whatever) at their wedding when given the chance! So when we found we had a half hour with nothing pressing on their wedding day (and when does that happen?!?) we jumped at the chance to pile the wedding party in the car for a quick trip to a nearby court to shoot some hoops. How cool is that?!

It’s very cool. So cool it deserved it’s own blog post. There are more pictures from Amiee and Troy’s beautiful wedding at The Towers in Narragansett in Rhode Island on the Brown Eyed Photography fan page. I’ll be sure to share more from their day on the blog in the near future.
