22 No-Fuss Family Christmas Traditions to Start This Year

Brown Eyed Photography Posted on December 4, 2017 by sarahNovember 15, 2017

The best Christmas traditions begin organically. For example, one Christmas Eve my mom was frustrated because my dad wanted to go to church and she knew she had hours of wrapping still to do. So my dad offered to bring … Continue reading →

Fall Family Photography in the North Country

Brown Eyed Photography Posted on October 2, 2017 by sarahSeptember 19, 2017

We live here!  Where fall is gorgeous – every year.
This is one of the most popular times of year to have family portraits made and there are several location options that take advantage of our awesome scenery.

Family-Photography-Saranac-NY

Four Excellent Locations for your Fall Family Photography Session

  1. John Brown Farm in Lake Placid is fall-tastic. There is a historic barn, open fields, a small pond, and more. I never get bored when I meet clients at John Brown Farm.
  2. Woven Meadows in Saranac, NY has plenty of rustic appeal that is surrounded by beautiful color, without fail, every fall. As this is my family farm, I know all the best locations for gorgeous adirondack scenery, that make you and your loved ones shine <3 Some of the ideal spots require a bit of a walk – but it’s always worth it. You may even have a few chickens or cows in the background.
  3. Farms are beautiful (of course), but if you’re looking for something a little different – finding beauty in the urban edges is amazing. And yes – we can certainly get that urban look in the North Country. Plattsburgh, Malone, Saranac Lake, and Lake Placid are all obvious choices. But there are plenty of adorable “Main Street” options too – like in Peru, Keeseville, Rouses Point, and more!
  4. Your own back yard is always a favorite. This is the place that is the most meaningful to you but sometimes the hardest place to see beauty … because you see it every day. If you choose to stay at home for your family fall session, I promise, the beauty in your own backyard will quickly become evident.

A girl and Her Horse Photography in the Adirondacks

Brown Eyed Photography Posted on December 10, 2016 by sarahNovember 25, 2016

A Girl and Her Horse

The point of family photography is to capture the essence of what makes a family unique. I’m passionate about embracing the unique in each person, each family dynamic, each photo shoot. I resist cookie-cutter, putting people in a box, creating a formula … I like working with people because people are so different and so the same … it’s that teasing out what makes humans the same and discovering their unique aspects that makes this so interesting.

Grace, the older to sister to five brothers, loves her horses. So when her mom contacted me to schedule a shoot and we started talking details … I mentioned that I’d love to do some time with the horses and Grace. Grace was hoping for the same! After getting some fun family images with everyone wrangled, Grace went off to get the horses. She came back, riding bareback. Have you seen anything more incredible?!

Authentic Images

This is my favorite! When we get awesome family images and we take the time to create images that are even more off the beaten path, by including incredible pets, capturing natural interactions, and creating authentic images. This time in Grace’s life will be over soon – she’s growing up fast – just ask her mom. Grace is invested in her horses and has been riding for many years. I’m so glad we were able to capture her with the animals she loves, in her own environment, moving in the way that made the most sense to her and the horses. We made sure to get a variety – closeups of Grace and her favorite horse, Passion as well as some experimental action shots – where I could say: “Grace, do you want to try ….” She was up for anything and it was such a fantastic way to wrap up a family shoot with a family I could spend days and days with!
